From the Pastor’s Pen

Friends, the guest writer this week is Rob Elia, MPC @Tahoe

For over 40 years, the MPC community has gathered at the shores of South Lake Tahoe for a week of camaraderie, campfires, songs, games, and spiritual and personal growth. MPC@Tahoe is one of our most cherished traditions: some of us remember attending MPC’s Family Camp as kids and now look forward to MPC@Tahoe each summer. In this era of COVID, climate change, political polarization, systemic racism, and all the difficulties and concerns of modern life, we are grateful more than ever for this refuge, a moment of peace for contemplation and renewal.

While COVID took 2020’s event away from us, the MPC@Tahoe committee is excited and thankful to present 2021’s COVID-safe MPC@MPC right here in the church courtyard! Speaking of thankfulness, this year’s event explores the life-changing implications of practicing mindful gratitude. Our speaker, acclaimed author Nancy Davis Kho, spent one year writing thank-you letters to the many people who had influenced, helped, and inspired her, and unexpectedly experienced a profound and positive effect on her own happiness—a benefit confirmed by emerging research. Nancy will lead a program based on her book The Thank-You Project to guide us out of our COVID weariness into a more joyful, grateful way of living.

MPC@MPC will take place on Friday evening, August 27th and Saturday, August 28th in the church courtyard, and is open to everyone at MPC. The event will be COVID-safe: entirely outdoors and fully masked except for socially distanced meals. The schedule includes:

Friday evening, August 27th

  • We’ll gather in the evening, outdoors on the church patio, for some fun Tahoe-style community: S’mores, a Talent/No-Talent Show, and more!

Saturday, August 28th

  • Debbie’s famous Tahoe pancakes for breakfast—a delicious tradition. Plus ice cream if you like!
  • Our morning program led by Nancy Davis Kho
  • A children’s program led by our own Clementina Chacón-Garcia
  • Late-morning games and activities, affectionately known as “Burning Marshmallow”
  • A camp-style lunch
  • Closing circle around 2 pm

MPC@MPC: You can take MPC out of Tahoe, but you can’t take Tahoe out of MPC!
