Celebration Worship Service, February 18, 2024

PLEASE NOTE: Celebration is back in the sanctuary! Masks are optional, but encouraged. You also may watch the service on a live stream at home. Please use this option if you aren’t feeling well. To learn more about these choices, please visit mpcfamily.org/celebrate. In order to keep everyone healthy & safe, we will:

  • encourage masking when indoors
  • run the furnace filtration system for ventilation, doors and windows open only when necessary

In celebration this week:

  • Marcia Roy will present a prelude, “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”, setting by Johanna Christoph Bach
  • Rev. Ben Daniel will welcome everyone to Celebration,
  • then Helen Hutchison will lead us in a Call to Celebration (by Rev. Sarah Are, from A Sanctified Art)
  • The opening hymn will be “Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty”.
  • Next, Helen will lead us in a Prayer of Confession (National Council of Churches, Creation Justice Ministries), Words of Assurance (by Thom Shuman, adapted)
  • followed by a Time with Children. (Children will then be dismissed to Godly Play)
  • Invitations will be presented next,
  • Then the MPC Choir will perform “This We Know”, words attributed to Chief Seattle; music by Ron Jeffers, Kim Rankin directing
  • Helen will read from Matthew 4:1-11
  • Katie will deliver a sermon,
  • Then we will sing the hymn of response, “Many and Great, O God, Are Thy Works”, with the MPC Choir singing in Dakota language, and accompanied by Kel Bowen, Kim Rankin, Gail Onion on the Native flute; Leslie Louie on drums; and an ensemble from the choir on hand chimes
  • Next, the offering plates will be passed while an offertory, “Now I Walk in Beauty”. a Navajo (Diné) prayer, music by Gregg Smith, is played by Kim
  • Then we will share Prayers of the People.
  • The closing hymn will be “Wilderness Gifts Us a Holy Disruption”,
  • We will recite the Charge together,
  • There will be a benediction
  • followed by a postlude from Marcia


The Charge (say together) Go out into the world in peace. Have courage; hold on to what is good. Return no one evil for evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, and help the suffering. Honor all people. Care for Creation. Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
