FROM THIS WEEK’S GUEST WRITER, Margaret Irvin

“I do think this “religious” aspect is not in the marketplace of news. I do not want the term ‘Christian’ in our society to be associated with criminalizing those who differ on issues of morality. We should use persuasion, not force, let alone violence. Christians need to speak out now.”  ~ Margaret

As a white Christian woman, I find the Supreme Court’s leaked papers regarding abortion deeply offensive for religious reasons. We are not a theocracy. Our form of government rests on the separation of church and state. Even citizens who identify as Christians do not agree on the morality of abortion or of other issues such as the death penalty, killing in wars, or birth control.

We Americans denounce the Taliban and others as autocrats and terrorists who force their religious ideology on the girls and women in their power. Our constitutional democracy is set up to tolerate differences. No one is forcing a woman to have an abortion. She is free to follow her belief. But she is not free to criminalize other citizens who would find it morally irresponsible to continue a pregnancy.

Another moral question: how is the “pro-life” believer prepared to assist mothers and babies long-term?
