Our welcome to the LGBTQ+ community

No matter what people say,
Say, or think about you
You are a child, you are a child of God

Child of God, by Mark Miller (watch on YouTube)

Everyone is welcome

Montclair Presbyterian Church is an LGBTQ+ Affirming congregation. We bless and affirm LGBTQ+ relationships, and our clergy officiate same-sex weddings. We support and welcome the leadership of LGBTQ individuals at all levels of leadership in the church, including committee chairs, elders, and pastors.

MPC is proud to have a long history of working for full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in the life of the church. We became a “More Light” Presbyterian church nearly forty years ago (in 1987!) while most of the church was still wrestling with the issue. MPC’s support for the LGBTQ+ community can be seen in very visible ways — such as the rainbow and transgender Pride flags on the front of our sanctuary — but also in more subtle ways, such as our work with More Light PresbyteriansThat All May Freely Serve, and the Covenant Network of Presbyterians.

MPC at Oakland Pride

Our church has marched in Oakland Pride for decades. In 2023, one our our members was even interviewed at the event by a local news station! Check out the video

The PCUSA and LGBTQ+ inclusion

The Presbyterian Church USA has been moving towards full inclusion for decades, reaching that goal in the late 2010’s. View a timeline of the PCUSA and LGBTQ+ inclusion

As is clear from the timeline, this has been a contentious issue for the PCUSA. But throughout the controversy, MPC’s support for the LGBT+ community has never wavered. In many ways, it’s stronger than ever.

We hope that you will visit us soon.
