Peace and Justice

He put before them another parable: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” —Matthew 13:31-32

Our Vision

We seek a world where the mustard seed has taken root and has become a sustaining tree, where compassion has become the overarching theme of our planet. We work to build a world where we treasure and protect our environment, where nonviolence has replaced war, where the economy sustains each individual and where human rights are uniformly honored. We invite your participation in any of the projects, programs or committees listed below. Please call Eloise Gilland, Peace and Justice Steering Committee Chair, for further information.

Our Projects and Programs

For nearly two years, a group of dedicated and interested congregational leaders, members, and “friends of the family” at Montclair Presbyterian Church (MPC) met regularly to explore the possibility of MPC declaring itself to be a “Peace Church,” thereby committing itself in a formal way to the ongoing work of moving our society beyond its addiction to military violence, and of bearing witness to God’s beloved community. A preliminary version of A Peace Church Declaration was made available to the entire congregation beginning in August 2018 and has been revised with congregational input. The congregation voted to approve the Declaration on November 11, 2018, the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The link above will take you to the approved final version.
