Taking action to preserve democracy

The Democracy & Politics Team is a project of MPC’s Earth Care Committee. Its goals are:

  • To help enact effective climate policy at all levels of government.
  • To help preserve and strengthen American democracy so it can take effective action on urgent climate, economic and social-justice issues

The Democracy & Politics Team hosts a popular democracy study group which meets monthly. We share dinner, discuss pre-assigned reading materials that explore a relevant topic, and identify actions we can take in response. Our next meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025. Dinner is served at 5:00 pm. Discussion begins at 5:30 pm and ends by 7:00.

Pre-registration is required a minimum of 3 days before the class Register for the class here.

The Democracy & Politics Team’s 150+ volunteers engage in activities such as:

  • Non-partisan voter registration and voter turnout campaigns (postcards, canvassing, phone-banking)
  • Calling and emailing decisionmakers to urge the protection of democratic norms, Constitutional rights, voting access and the adoption of effective climate policies
  • Non-violent protests to express peacefully our views and concerns
  • Boycotts of corporations whose emphasis on profit over the respectful treatment of workers and the environment conflicts with our values
  • Patronizing small businesses that support the local economy and good jobs
  • Accessing credible media sources that represent a range of viewpoints, and don’t just confirm what we already believe
  • Developing our ability to listen with respect and seek to understand views different from our own (e.g. with Braver Angels) to help repair our country’s extreme political polarization.
