Here is a passage from today's sermon; the text is Luke 24:13-35, the story of the Road to Emmaus... Now, at the beginning of the sermon I asked if anyone had been to the path of the Totality and I joked about how if you went to the Totality, or even if you weren’t there, you didn't see Jesus return. But actually, that's probably not even true, not if we read this morning's lesson from Luke the way I think it should be read. Because people from all over the world traveled to the path of the Totality on Monday. Between Mazatlán and Maine, a lot of folks descended upon cities and towns and country roads and national parks. And I'm willing to bet that a lot of travelers met new people and made friends. I'm sure a lot of hospitality was extended and received, people broke bread together, a great deal of kindness was shared between people whose only commonality was an interest in seeing the moon pass in front of the sun. For a moment, it didn't matter if you wore a MAGA Hat or Joe Cool sunglasses, if you were into NASCAR racing or Bikram Yoga. What mattered was the beautiful dance of heavenly bodies. And the risen Christ, I'm fairly certain, showed up for that, Just as Christ always is present when we are kind to strangers, when we share meals together, when we walk and talk together along the journey of life. Christ is live and among us. Jesus returned in many ways and in all sorts of places on Monday. A lot of those places were on the path of the Totality. But Jesus also came back in the Partiality and in the Nowhere Even Close. Because it is the nature of Christ to be among us when people are meeting as strangers who become friends. Christ sits at table with us. When we journey somewhere, Jesus walks and talks with us along the way. So, while I am somewhat unlikely ever to suggest you open your Bible and your newspaper--or, let's be honest: your news app--and look for signs of Jesus immanent return, I do hope you will look with seriousness of earnestness for the Christ who returns to us every day in acts of kindness and hospitality. ...
