Costume Ideas

Many things that are in our own closet or costume box at home can be used for your Yule Feast costume.  As well many accessories to dress up your costume can be taken from your current fashions


 Some items that you might find are:

 

Men       Old pants that can be rolled up or cut off

              Tights, leggings or long winter underwear

              Hats, Headbands and Scarves

              Vests, Tunics or Capes

              Belts or Sashes

              Boots, Sandals or Simple Shoes

              Long Peasant Style Shirts

  

Women   Peasant or Appropriate Blouse

              Hats, Flower Wreaths, Ribbons for Head or Hair

              Jewelry, Chains, Beads, Pins, Feathers, Lace or other Trims

              Long Skirt or Dress

              Aprons, Sashes or Overskirts

              Stockings, Tights & Shoes

 

 Be creative, but most important – HAVE FUN!

   

NOTES on COSTUME CREATION

When thinking about planning your 14th Century costume, remember how many occupations there were at that time.  Most of the people were poor.

Costume component suggestions for MEN:

 

  1. Feet:  Sandals    Boots

 

  1. Legs:  Tights

Long winter underwear in dark colors – with dark jogging shorts over

Old trousers, cut short, made into knickers with rubber bands, bright color knee sox worn with the knickers.

 

  1. Torso:  Open neck, long sleeve shirt under ….

Tunic

Blouse with full sleeves under tunic

Long robe with fur, jewels, gold thread trim

Bathrobe with hood for a monk

Sash, belt, rope tied at waist

 

  1. Head:  Raggy hat, pointed “Robin Hood” type hat, oversized beret, crown

 

  1. Jewels:  Gaudy costume jewelry

Maccaroni: string it, spray gold, glue on sparkling glitter

 

  1. Instrument for minstrel – add colorful ribbons to simple instrument – lute,

recorder, tambourine

 

Costume component suggestions for WOMEN:

 

  1. Feet:  flat heel pumps, sandals

 

  1. Legs: stockings

 

  1. Dress:  Dirndl skirt with peasant blouse & apron

Gunny Sax type dress from thrift shop

Nightgown with long sleeves worn under long full skirt

Velvet or velour robe or dress

 

  1. Jewelry – see MEN

 

  1. Head:  Mob cap made from 14” circle of fabric, gathered near edge

Pointed hat with chiffon or net covering and “trailer”

Wreath of dried or artificial flowers
